New Community Contests

I am starting this thread especially for our next newsletter. I'd like to ask our users what kind of Community Contests you guys would like to see on DC in the future. You already know what Community Contest are - they are contests open to all registered members of DC. Their purpose is to provide a sort of playground for designers to mess around with graphics where beginners can compete with professionals and write comments about others' entries as well as receive feedback.

So far we've been mainly doing illustration contests (you've definitely seen our Monster Sketch Series) but I was wondering if there are other things that you would like to do? We've receintly had a Monster Smells logo contest and it was a lot of fun. But maybe you have other interesting ideas?

No matter how crazy your idea may seem, feel free to post it in this forum and we could discuss it and maybe create an interesting contest based on it?

I think Corporate identities (E.G. logo / letterhead / business card / stationary) would be a good basis for the next community contest wave. It would definitely help allot of the newer designers thinking about getting into that area of the industry to practice & polish off the skill set. Even those that only do logo's would find the contest beneficial, as they would be able to see what the logo looks like in action (For those that haven't tried it yet).

There's thousands of different market arena's to choose from, so there is an unlimited span of business types that could be launched as a project. To make it more challenging, one could also add additional restrictions that require Abstract Only, Typography only, Supporting iconical element only, etc..

Corporate identities may be a little more work due to the extra canvas specs that the logo needs to be displayed on, however it would definitely prove to be a challenge for some & worth it's weight in gold for the hands on experience it delivers. Of course the project brief would have to be relative to an actual companies brief & overview.

Just my opinion though, amongst thousands of others.

What I think is great is two contests going...the pretend logo type contests, doesn't need to be monster related just something fake and a sketch going on.

As far as sketch contests enviroments and chracter development are important for illustrators while perspective is important for all...........I look at these community contests as GREAT chance to practice and get feedback. Since DC tends to have the most contests as logos A logo contest going same time

An insect contest would be great! but..I would not limit it to vector, many do not have a vector program, I would just limit it to no photo manipulation. I have a photo manipulation contest running around in my mind for a future contest.

Character design (comic/videogame/animation), could be an interesting contest.

Or... CD cover or magazine cover design....

An event poster

Storyboard for TV spot? (crazy idea)

what about just a fake logo contest - that way, those that aren't elite designers can build their portfolios and get a sense for a logo contest from DC?

I've been trying to free up some time, but you know how that can go!

someone (like you, for instance - ha!) could just make up a random name/business and assign it to us. It'd be good practice to have limitations like 1 - 2 colors, too...just my opinion, though.

That's probably one of the more simple contest approaches for those that actually want to be an elite designer & aren't just here for the community networking / collaboration aspects.

Maybe a few simple logo contests & then follow it up with a full corporate identity contest after they get some hands on experience with logo's.

I like that idea too

yeah, I think this could be fun. A while ago we did a new logo for Wacom and the contest got a lot of great designs.
